Long Cross Coinage
Type of coinage introduced by King Henry III in 1247, deriving its name from the reverse which bore a cross whose arms extended right to the edge to help safeguard the coins against clipping. This remained the style of the silver penny, its fractions and multiples, until the reign of Henrv Vll, and vestiges of the long cross theme can be seen in the silver coins throughout the remaining years of the Tudor period.
